Featured Installation: Do Ho Suh

Do Ho Suh’s sculpture 348 West 22nd St. (2003) is a life size, walkable recreation of a corridor in his first apartment in New York City. He moved into this apartment in his late twenties, immigrating from South Korea to further pursue his artistic career and education. Suh has nicknamed these sculptures “Suitcase Homes” as the pink, lightweight, nylon material makes the work easily transportable and installable, mirroring his migratory life history. This material embodies the influence his Korean heritage has on his work, as it was handsewn with the help of traditional Korean seamstresses that made many of his mother’s Kimonos. His father, renowned Korean ink-painter Suh Se Ok, built his childhood home, begetting Do Ho Suh’s artwork to thematically touch upon the relationship between our bodies and the spaces we inhabit.
