The Photography Study Center at The Margulies Collection is a center for the education and research of contemporary and vintage photography with a mission to further visual literacy in our community.
The Margulies Collection is the largest photography collection of its kind in South Florida, with over 4,000 vintage and contemporary works from the most important figures of the 20th and 21st centuries. Martin Z. Margulies has been named by ARTnews magazine as one of the top 25 photography collectors in the world and has collected photographs for more than 25 years. The collection continues to advance and reflect on the cultural significance and historic importance of the photographic medium in our contemporary society.
The Photography Study Center expands our commitment to photography by having a dedicated space that gives visitors, scholars, and students the opportunity for hands-on viewing of the photographs. The archives include flat-file style storage, exhibition space, and a reading center to provide an immersive experience with the photography collection. The Study Center produces annual exhibition programs and provides open access to its library, as well as offering appointments for scholarly review of the flat files and artist films. Additionally, designed to serve multiple functions, is an adjacent café-style area accommodates reservations for conferences, meetings and gatherings.
The collection includes vintage European and American photographers such as Albert Renger-Patzsch, August Sander, Alexander Rodchenko, Hugo Schmölz, Adolf Lazi, Helen Levitt, Lewis Hine, Berenice Abbott, Robert Frank, Lewis Baltz, Robert Adams, and Dorothea Lange, among others. In addition, the archives feature contemporary photographers Alec Soth, Cindy Sherman, Gregory Crewdson, Justine Kurland, Danny Lyon, Thomas Struth, Andreas Gursky, Paolo Ventura, Stephen Shore, Joel Sternfeld, Thomas Ruff, and Wael Shawky, among others.
Over 200 works of vintage, and contemporary photographs are hung salon-style, corner to corner, and floor to ceiling in our renovated storage area. The salon walls highlight photographs by many of the artists listed above in addition to Nina Katchadourian, Hank Willis Thomas, Stan Douglas, Carrie Mae Weems, and Miles Coolidge, among others.
